MEET THE ARTIST
Lyla Clayre is a watercolor artist based in New Orleans. She was born in Northern California and earned a BFA in Illustration from California College of the Arts. After graduating, she relocated to New Orleans and began creating watercolors inspired by the city’s iconic architecture and Louisiana’s lush landscapes.
Much of her artwork is painted on location in the tradition of Impressionist painters, capturing the feeling of place and time. Watercolors as a medium encourage improvisation and spontaneity, which lends itself to a place that is constantly shifting.
Lyla has exhibited at art markets and festivals since 2014 including Festival International de Louisiane, The Arts Market of New Orleans, The Bayou Boogaloo, Luna Fete, YLC Wednesday at the Square, Freret Festival, Po Boy Festival, and more.
Her work has been included in group shows at The New Orleans Arts Center, Prospect 4, Femaissance exhibitions Primavera, Proserpina, and Gemini, and in 2019 a solo exhibition curated by Femaissance in The New Orleans Arts Council’s SALON at Canal Place.
She has collaborated with local brands including Century Girl Vintage and Leah’s Pralines, creating custom illustrations for their products.
In her home studio, Lyla scans her original paintings and makes her own fine art prints.
